I will forget your
question. When sparrows grow solid bones
When snapping turtles sink and cannot
lift a little boy's foot like a stone
When leeches lose their desire only
to sponge
When walleye eyes don't glow
in a little boy's hand
at night, under a flashlight. (My son: Do you like your new sandbox by the lake?)
This is when I will forget: When earthworms find their way
into my own box in the sand,
as near as they'll put me
by the lake where we fished and
where you swam and
where was I? Who put that hole in the sky?
That's easy:
it was I.
