CHRISTOPHER MCKITTERICK

spark of creation

eyes that once only saw
earth and plants and food and bugs
look up see lights
spattered across a velvet dome

minds become three-dimensional
          space(-ial)
grow visions of tomorrows:
silvery scaffoldings to the sky

paper and pen collide to create plans
ephemeral origami rocketships
titanium and hands combine to form
fragile-smooth egg-machines
to hurl violently yet gently who's inside

howling of pumps building white-hot
pressure and roaring breath
straining in a scream yet demanding more
igniting fuels expanding exploding
thrusting the capsule past the wall of sky

weeds need not be planted
seeds scattered into wind quickly spread
shooting tubers into the soil
of our universe
with a million billion stars
growing fleshy pollinators

preserving this delicate species are the
supportive fires:
  star sun hearth mind rocket
in a universe awakening
to a pollen-thick breeze
